Part time resources? (newbie question)

Hi,

I'm trying to set up a project using MS Project 2003, but I can't
really understand how to manage part time resources.

Say I have a task which is planned to take 40 hours. If I assign a
regular 40 hour per week resource to that task, it will take one week.

But how to I specify a resource which will always work only 4
hours/day?

Then if a assign that part time resource to the 40 hour task, I expect
it to take 2 weeks.

Hi Jarl,

I assume you have modified the resource's calendar to only show the 4 hours
per day in working time.

Create the 5-day (or 1 wk) duration task, split your screen (Window > Split)
to show the Task Form in the lower pane. Select the resource's name from
the drop-down underneath Resource and specify 40 hours of work in the work
field, Project will recalculate the *finish* date of the task.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Julie,

Thank you very much, it works perfectly!!!

Just one minor question, is there a way to modify the resource's
calendar for a whole year or two? (Editing one week at a time is so
boring...)

Sure - just select all the day-of-the-week column headings in the calendar
and make your changes. If you select Mon, for example, and change the work
hours it will effect all Mondays forwards and backwards in time.

Hi Jarl,

You are very welcome and thanks for the feedback. It looks like Steve has
answered your second question - but please do post back if you have
additional questions.

Thanks Steve for answering! (Actually I found out the answer by myself
10 minutes ago - Sometimes lost, but not always...)

What if you want to change the working time for a particluar period. say 6
months of 1 year a person is part time. Is there a quick way to do this
without changing their entire caldendar?

Hi ellebelle,

If the person truly goes to part time (08:00 to 12:00 for example) for a
portion of the year, I know of no other way than to manually edit
his/her calendar. You can contour a resource's maximum units over time
through the Resource Information dialog box.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

You are probably right, although it seems pretty disfunctional.

Is there a way to apply a specific calendar to a task?

Hi ellebelle,

Yes, Project 2000 and later has the ability to create and apply task
calendars. Create the calendar, double click on the task to view the
Task Information dialog box. On the Advanced tab, select the calendar.
You can also set whether the task is scheduled based upon the common
working time between the task and resource calendar or just the task
calendar by selecting "scheduling ignores resource calendar."

To be honest however, this appears to be just about as much work as
editing the resource's calendar.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
