Either, I'm not aware of any way to do it with MS product, is there a 3rd
party add on or anything that I can do to password protect a document either
excel or word before someone can open it?

jcross39,

The help content (F1) in each application can be a great resource for how to
do things like this.

That said, try:

File | Save As | Tools | General Options (in both Word and Excel 2000)

If you have a different version or can't find it, post back.

And PowerPoint introduced passwording as of PPT 2002 (aka PPT XP), so it's
not available at all in PPT 2000 or 97.

In the versions where available, it's under File/Save As/Tools/Security
Options and also under Tools/Options/Security if you don't want to go the
"save as" route.
