Password Protected docs

M

Mohaned Elkhalifa

I have been unable viewing MS Office Docs that are password protected with my
version of Mac MS Office 2008 !
Is it designed that way or I have to do something to make it work ?

There's no specific answer to your question because the question is far too
vague - especially since it's posted to the "general" Office newsgroup. In
order to offer any help we need to have specific details;

What specific type of "MS Office Docs" are you referring to... Word? Excel?
Powerpoint? If any one specific type it would be better to post to that
particular group, but even if it's an assortment you need to clarify.

Where (PC or Mac) & by what exact verision of Office were the files created?

Where are the files stored & how did they get to you?

How are you attempting to "view" the files & what - exactly - happens when
you attempt to open the problem documents?

Give the specific update level of your installation of Office 2008 as well
as OS X in any queries you post.

what are these questions you are asking, if it was with a particular type of
docs i would have sure posted my question accurately, it's with all of them
I CAN NOT OPEN PASSWORD PROTECTED MS OFFICE DOCS IN MY MAC BOOK PRO WITH
Your Office 2008 for MAC.
why do you want to know who sent me or where i store them, if you have an
answer to my question then do without asking irrelative questions !!!!

First of all it isn't "my" Office 2008 for Mac. The responders here do not
work for MS. We're users who volunteer their time, expertise & experience in
an effort to assist other users.

Secondly, we can't do so without sufficient information from the
questioner... If the answers weren't important I wouldn't have asked the
questions.

If you're unwilling to help us help you why bother to ask?

Thanks for your concern, but i don't think i would need your help even if you
know what i'm talking about.

May be someone else that has better communication skills than you can help me.

I think it is you Mohaned, with the communication skills problem. We (users
just like you) are here trying to help YOU solve YOUR problems. If you are
not willing to engage and answer some questions that we feel are relevant to
the possible solution, then solve the problem your self and don't ask!

The questions were asked because this problem is sometimes a result of
incompatible email configurations, Windows version that created the
document, and specific update level of the software involved. If you are not
willing to help us help YOU then go elsewhere for support.

ok, let's see how are you going to sole my problem,
I have a document which is of kind Microsoft Powerpoint 97- 2004, forwarded
to me by email, i've not used any client to download that doc i.e direct
access from my gmail account where the doc was sent to me.
Downloaded the doc to my MacBook Pro hard disk in which i have installed
Microsoft office 2008 & iWork, and trying any of them to open the PPT is not
successful and the reason i get it's password protected!!

Does that explains my issue or you have more questions ??

I've read this thread and have more questions:

1. You did not create the PowerPoint file. Correct?
2. Have you asked the creator for the password?
3. Does that password not work?
4. Can the creator resend you the document without password protection?

Or are you saying that *you* created this PowerPoint file and did not
password protect it?

1. You did not create the PowerPoint file. Correct? Yes
2. Have you asked the creator for the password? No
3. Does that password not work? Did not get the passwd
4. Can the creator resend you the document without password protection? Not
sure, note: it have noticed the same thing with many other docs (word/ excel
/ ppt) that are sent to me from different people

Or are you saying that *you* created this PowerPoint file and did not
password protect it? I did not create that file , I have received the
PowerPoint file by email

B

Bob Greenblatt

If you have received a password protected document, then the sender should
supply to you the password to open it, or send an unprotected version. If
you are asking us how to open a protected document without the password I
will not do that.

Thank you very much for the help, seems like i'm wasting my time here.

No Wonder...

Having read this thread through, it appears to me that you are asking
for a way to break the password protection on a file that was created
and protected by its owner, who has not provided you the password.

Can you see why it appears to others that you may be attempting to do
something illegitimate?

It would appear differently if you had a legitimate password that wasn't
working, or if the file appeared to be protected, but the owner told you
that there's no password protection.

It would even appear differently if you had a file that you had a
legitimate reason to open, but the password was lost or the person who
created the file was not available.

However, from what you've written, none of those situations appear to
apply.

Appreciate your concern Mr JE,
I'm not trying to crack any thing here, the issue is that even if i had the
password i don't get the prompt to key it in, i even can not view in
real-only , all i get is error can not open password protected documents

C

CyberTaz

PowerPoint on the Mac simply does not support file level password
protection. I trust my statement is comprehendible.

Got sidetracked by your mention of XL and Word, sorry -

Both of those apps support password protected docs. Powerpoint doesn't.

Hello Mohaned Elkhalifa,

I just landed on this message in the middle of the conversation.
Unfortunately, PowerPoint 2008 (and all previous versions) on the Mac do
not have the ability to open password protected PowerPoint files.

OpenOffice version 3 is also not able to open password protected
PowerPoint files.

You can use the Help menu in PowerPoint to send a feature request to
Microsoft that PowerPoint on the Mac should have the ability to open
Password Protected documents. I am sure that if they knew that Mac users
were facing this kind of difficulty that the would do something about it.

Thanks.
