Pasting text inot a bullet point does not work

Word 2002 - I have a series of bullet points. I want to add a bullet point
at the bottom, and copy some text into it. When I try to paste, the cursor
jumps out of the bullet point and onto the line below, where the text is
then pasted.

Is there a work-around, and WHY would anyone build this daft behaviour into
a word-processor in the first place?

It sounds as if perhaps the pasted text includes a paragraph mark?

Try the Edit > Paste Special command and select the Unformatted Text option.
