pdf conversion of ppt file yields HUGE file

I have ongoing problem in pdf conversion. for example:

a 256 K powerpoint file becomes 15,700 k in the pdf format
when Adobe v6 is used.

how can I obtain pdf files of more reasonable size?

This problem is not occurring under Word when files of
similar content are converted.
