With recent versions of Word, the FILENAME field won't update automatically.
See the KB article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832897/en-us (The
FILENAME field does not automatically update when you open a document in
Word).

You can use a macro to update all fields in a document. Attach the macro to
a button on the Quick Access Toolbar and/or to a keyboard shortcut. See
http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm. If you want to avoid macros, you
will have to force an update by switching to Print Preview/Backstage
(Ctrl+F2) and then back to your previous view (ESC).

thank you

is this to be inserted in the footer of a document with footer or in
footer in file normal.dotm ?

You should modify your template, yes. However, using a custom template is
usually a better idea than modifying Normal.dotm, because header/footer
content may interfere with label printing I believe.

As far as the field updating is concerned, note that FILENAME fields do not
update automatically in recent versions of Word. This was a design change a
few versions back. You can force an update by switching to Print Preview
(Ctrl+F2) and then back to the previous view (ESC), or you can use a macro
to update all fields in the document. For the macro approach, see the
example at http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm.
