how do you enter an entry to appear in the contact's activity tab? I believe
it's via the journal but I can't get them to appear in the contact.

Right-click the Contacts folder, click Properties, then the Activities tab.
See if all the folders you want Activities to search are listed there.

I did as you suggested but when I tried to add the 2nd contacts folder I
could not since it is in Public folders. The error indicated that you cannot
have both types searched simultaneously.

I believe you can only show the activities from the default message store, or
at least the same message store that the contacts folder is in.

The additional contacts file is in public folders and is shared with others.
I guess then you can't turn journaling on for those contacts then.
