Photo files - I absolutely detest them

K

Kakawin

It seems no matter how much effort I put into saving or naming picture files,
the programs that open, browse or upload them do something else.

I've just uploaded a couple of hundred pictures taken over several days that
are named Feb 27th Photo (1), (2)...(53) etc etc and Feb 28th Photo (1),
(2)... (64) etc etc. The stupid things arrived ordered thusly - Feb 27th
Photo (1), (10), (11), (12) ... then (2), (20), (21), (22) and (3), (31),
(32), (33) and so on and so on. I tried 001 002 003 and it didn't do a thing.
They came in (001), (010), (011) etc etc.

It seems no matter what I do or how many programs I use to struggle with the
issue of naming photos so they open in the excact order I took them (which is
critically important) it just doesn't work. Even when I renamed them in
Windows Explorer the silly things were FUBAR.

Will someone please, for the love of God, help me by directing me to the one
program that will work as advertised.

This isn't an Office issue or related to Office. Sorting by name is an
operating system feature. I would consider very carefully your chosen
naming convention and then do the renaming. If you are expecting January
to come before February in the alphabet then that is where the problem
lies. Whatever "autonaming" scheme your camera software does is yours to
put right.

hmm?

have you tried
aaa,
aab,
aac,

etc....,

zzz

you probably should test
out these features with
10 pics instead of hundreds...

whats the url for them....

No I haven't tried that and I can't understand why I should. The photos are
on a private ftp site, and the report that goes with them has an index
attached that references numbers in the report's text. I'll have to edit the
one's I sent to reflect the change you suggest.

I guess I'll just have to hope people look at the photos I've sent so far by
choosing sort by date taken,

As it is the photos are saving themselves as 1, 10, 11 12, 13...2, 20, 21,
22, 23...3, 30, 31, 32, 33...

I realize computers are logical as opposed to rational and that its the
user's fault or default for expecting something reasonable. Such is life,
irritating as it is sometimes.

I did and it worked perfectly.

I guess my computer that can't count any higher.

Just as you can't drive your car while sitting in the back seat, until
you come to grips with the way the software works/responds, you will
continue to bang your head against the wall.

db

ok,

i took a look on a website
were all the pics were in order
and there file names had 9 digits.

this may be the key to organizing
them :

100003260, 100003250, 100003240

071405000, 071405010, 071534000

incidently, have you checked out or
contacted the people who run your ftp
upload site?

db's solution is even more depressing. 100003260, 100003250, 100003240 nicely
puts the picture in a referential frame the computer can use the picture but
its not the way most humans get their heads around reality.

I did contact the owner of the ftp site and they said they can sort the
photos by time and get around the way the first 9 digits get spread out
amongst the other 90 but its a pain in the butt. Given that its the computers
way or the highway we're now looking for a way to name a picture with its
time stamp.

No luck yet and unfortunately I'll have to look later...because I have to go
take another bunch of photos today.

Thanks for all the suggestions, keep them coming.

It has to do with how the numbers are sorted. Say you have 500 pictures
from Spain. Use a format that has 3 digits like Spain001, Spain002. That
way they should sort correctly. I use a free program called IrfanView to
rename photos in a batch.

db's solution is even more depressing. 100003260, 100003250, 100003240 may
provides an accurate referential way of looking at the world from a
computers perspective but not a human. I did contact the owner of the ftp

computer spreads the first 9 digits amongst the other 90 but its a pain in

Now we're looking for a way to name the photo with its time stamp but no
luck yet. Unfortunately I'll have to look tonight because today I have to go
take another whole bunch of pictures.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions, keep 'em coming.

Thanks

hmm

then maybe using a different service
would be better.

myprivateworld provides mass uploads,
unlimited storage and has superior
pic management. In that you
can move the pics in any order and
give them descriptions, apart from
the filenames.

microsoft moved the majority
of the msn groups to this server a
while back and remains a free place
to post pics....

i'm not sure but i think it is also
called ifriends or something like that.
i guess the alternative site names
provide an additional option as well...

I'm going to keep working on using the time stamp as the filename. I'll take
my cue from db and move it on over to microsoft.public.windowsxp.photos.

Thanks again.
