picture tool bar does not always remove background colour. Why

I have inserted a picture with a coloured background. While I use the picture
tool bar to make the background transparent, it does not always work. What is
the problem. Is it the extention of the file?

I've found that the transparency tool in PowerPoint is too limited to be of
real value. I would suggest using Photo Shop, Digital Image, or even Photo
Editor before I would rely on PowerPoint's transparency tool.

To do this, open your presentation, save the image as a file (PNG or GIF to
preserve the alpha channel transparency), open with a photo editing
software, make the corrections, save it and then re-insert it into your
PowerPoint presentation. It is more work, but will deliver a much higher
quality.

You can also check this transparency tutorial out, you will need either
Photoshop 6.0+ and Paint Shop Pro though.
