Placing a tab in the center of a table column

Is there an easy way to set a tab in the exact center of a table
column? In some cases, the column will have an odd width as the result
of column balancing.

If there is, I don't know what it would be. I usually just eyeball it,
sometimes adjusting a little to compensate for uneven entries. If you have a
centered heading on the column, you can drag the tab stop until the dotted
line below it is visually in the center of your centered heading.

That suggests a method. Put a "." or a "|" or a "^" in the cell,
centered, and use that to align the tab.
