Pls Help Inbox repair tool problem with outlook 2000

My Outlook won't open anymore: it says that there is a
problem with the pst file and I should use the inbox
repair tool

However, the index repair tool (Scanpst.exe) won't work:
it just quits with an error message: "An error has
occured which caused the scan to be stopped. No changes
have been made to the scanned file"
I'm running Outlook (not Outlook Express) on a Windows
2000 Professional platform.

Could anyone help me with this problem? I badly need my
data back..
