poor quality images in sent emails

Sometimes, I wish to include a small image inline with the rest of the text
in my emails. However, the quality of the image sent is much poorer than the
quality of the image pasted in (or inserted). It appears that the colour
depth has been reduced.

Does anyone know whey this is happening and how I can correct it please
