POP & gMail not working, please help

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Email Client: pop

I set up gMail to POP in Entourage as my default e-mail. After the initially download (which I believe was actually a sync from iMail) I haven't received a single e-mail. I can send out an e-mail, but nothing is coming in.

I went and set up IMAP with gMail (gave it a different name) and that's working fine and consistently.

However, I would like to set up the POP with gMail so it matches my iMail.

Please tell me what I am doing wrong.

I think I may have figured this out through the help/forums over at gMail. so now my question becomes would you recommend IMAP or POP. I think keeping both on my computer will be confusing.

Your initial problem could be the way you have Mail setup. (there is no
iMail...it's just Mail). My advice is not to use both Entourage and Mail
unless you know what you are doing.

I have a combination of POP and IMAP accounts (I have several accounts) but
not for the same account. It's personal preference. Hopefully after you read
the differences it will be more obvious to you.

Diane, Thanks so much. I decided to go with IMAP and gMail. Would you be able to answer another question:
Why aren't my e-mails appearing in On My Computer inbox? They are only appearing in my gMail/entourage inbox.

The folders under "On My Computer" are for messages that have been
downloaded from your mail server and then deleted from the server.
Typically, this is for POP accounts where "download and delete from
server" is the nature of POP.

IMAP accounts will always appear a separate accounts in Entourage
because they are kept synchronized with the server. Changes made within
IMAP accounts will be synchronized to the server and other computers or
mail applications that connect to the same account will see these
changes too. Because of this, IMAP accounts must be maintained separately.
