pop-up window focus problems

Application: Word 2000 SR1
Problem scenario: I open my file manager. I find a Word document to open. I
double click on the document and it opens. But I notice the focus of the
cursor is not set into the editing window (the cursor is not blinking). I
click the file menu to select print. The print pop-up window is not visible.
It is hidden behind the main document window. I have to minimize the main
window to see the print pop-up window.

This is a nuisance to no end. What can I do or what do I have to change to
correct this focus problem?
