Are you selecting something to be the hyperlink? Try
clicking on Help in PowerPoint and enter "Create Hyperlink"
It will tell you multiple ways to create hyperlinks to
many things.
Or enter some text for the hyperlink, highlight the text,
click on Insert, Hyperlink (it shouldn't be grayed out
anymore).

How can I create a hyperlink when the hyperlink emblam is
not high lighted just grayed out?
.
You have to create text or an object that you want to
hyperlink from first. Then you should be able to highlight
or select the text or object and add your hyperlink.
