When I go to install Powerpoint 2003 in my laptop with XP professional on
it-I get an error message that it can't locate my office files. The upgrade
pagage I have is for Wondows 200 or XP.

The PowerPoint upgrade is for *Office*, not for Windows. Windows is your
operating system. Office is a suite of products that contains Word, Excel, etc.
They are two different and distinct things. Your PowerPoint upgrade disk
requires that you have Office installed. I suspect that you don't have Office.

hOK so do I download or purchase an office suite and then try the install?
What suite would you suggest?

I checked and I have Microsoft Office Word 2003, Excell Office 2003 and
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003. That's *Office* not just windows right???
Could it be that this is not really XP and I have the wrong disk?

You probably should have bought the $229 full version of Powerpoint 2003
instead of the $109 upgrade version of Powerpoint 2003. In order to qualify
for the upgrade version, you must have one or more of the following
qualifying products:

• PowerPoint version 2002, PowerPoint 2000, PowerPoint 97

• Office XP Developer, Office XP Professional Special Edition, Office XP
Professional, Office XP Small Business Edition, Office XP Standard

• Office 2000 Developer, Office 2000 Premium, Office 2000 Professional,
Office 2000 Small Business Edition, Office 2000 Standard

• Office 97 Professional, Office 97 Small Business Edition (version 2),
Office 97 Small Business Edition (version 1), Office 97 Standard

• Works Suite 2006, Works Suite 2004, Works Suite 2003, Works Suite 2002,
Works Suite 2001, Works 2000, Works 8.0, Works 7.0, Works 6.0

As you can see, Office 2003 is not a qualifying product.

You must have Office 2003 Basic, which is what some OEMs include on new
computers. That means, as garfield-n-odie says, that you need the "full"
version of PowerPoint 2003, not the upgrade version.

How does one tell?

Good question. Do you have the documentation that came with your system?
It's probably listed there somewhere. There's probably a way to tell on the
computer itself, but I've no idea how to do it. (Maybe someone else will,
though.)

At any rate, I'm with Sonia. The combination of Excel + Word + Outlook is
almost certainly what's known as Office Basic, and that's a new version
available only with the 2003 versions -- Office Basic 2003. So there is no
"Office Basic XP." I think you probably have Office Basic 2003 and Windows
XP.

Try Help, About Microsoft PowerPoint

On my system, the second line of text in the resulting dialog box says "Part of
Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003"

I'm guessing that it'll identify Basic, Student or any other editions as
such.

Well, duh. It would help if I'd look at PPT 2003 instead of 2000 when
attempting to check this stuff, now, wouldn't it?

FWIW, PPT 2000 doesn't give Office version information in Help/About.
