C

Cass PGA

I added an .avi file to a Powepoint slide show. When the slide come up. it is
supoosed to load an play. It works fine on my system, when I e-mail it goes
through, no one else can see the video, just a balck screen stuck on the
first slide.

I tried burning a CD from my laptop, playing it on another system, no
good..We all have the latest XP stuff..so there is plenty of ram, etc.

My best guess is that the avi uses a codec that is not present on the other
machines. There are two possible solutions.

1. Find out what codec is being used in the avi and install it on all the
client machines.

2. Re-encode the avi using a more widely used codec.

You may do the re-encoding manually with several commercial applications and
utilities if you are comfortable with doing so, or you might give our new
add in for PowerPoint that does it all automatically for you a try. You can
download and install the fully functioning demo from www.pfcmedia.com. The
advantage here is that PFCMedia is designed to make the video compatible
with all versions of PowerPoint and the PowerPoint viewers without requiring
anything to be installed on client machines.

Are you sending the .avi file with your PPT? When inserting a movie, you are
just telling PPT that it has to play a movie at that point and provide
information where to find the movie. Have your .avi file and PPT presentation
both in the same folder, insert the movie into PPT and then send both files
out. Instruct the recipient to place both in the same folder. This should
then work fine.

Ok..I put the .avi file into the same folder as the powerpoint. I serted the
..avi new location into the Powepoint. Saved the new presentation. E-mailed
myself the new file, it still would not open??

Step by step.

1. Delete the video from the presentation.

2. Move the video to the same folder the presentation has been saved to.

3. Re-insert the video.

4. When copying, sending, or moving the presentation, include the video with
it. (Send ALL contents of the folder.)

Even more detailed step by step
1. create two new empty folders named, say, test1 and test2
2. copy your ppt presentation to test1
3. copy your .avi file to test1
4. open your presentation just saved to test1 – make sure you are opening
the copy from the test1 folder
5. from the just open presentation delete your .avi if already there
6. re-insert .avi from test1 folder
7. save and then close your presentation
8. send both .avi and the presentation (.ppt file) to yourself
9. once the mail arrives save the attachments to test2 folder. Make sure
that you are saving both .ppt and .avi files
10. from Windows explorer or My computer open test2 to make sure that both
files are in test2
11. open your .ppt presentation saved in test2
12. go to slide show and your video should display just fine

I had similar problem. Maybe you guys can me on that:
I have office 2000 and I created a presentation in PowerPoint 2000.
Here is what I did:
I insert a video clip (.avi file) as an object in a slide and set up to run
automatically (with windows media player) when the show hits that slide. It
runs perfect when I “View Slide Show†in .ppt mode on the computer I created
the show.
It also runs perfect when I saved it as .pps and ran it in the same
computer. Every time when this particular slide on, the video is on
automatically.
Here is my problem:
I need to run this on our client’s computer which has the same version MS
office and PowerPoint 2000.
I did “pack and goâ€. When packing, a box popped out and said, “Can’t find
the video clip on slide #45. Could you find it yourselfâ€, so I did. When I
unpacked it on my client’s computer, everything ran smoothly except that
slide. The video just won’t start, instead, an “Open†box pop out. I have
to click on the file in the file folder and make it run. I did put both .avi
and .pps file in the same folder.
Question:
Why can’t the PowerPoint 2000 pack the link as well?
Is there anything I can do to make the video run automatically on other
computers?

I hate to sound like a used car salesman but the add in I created will sovle
these issues for you. you can download the trial version (fully
functioning) from http://www.pfcmedia.com

Once your presentation is completed it will continue to functio even after
the trial period ends and it requires nothing to play on your clients
computer.

Thanks, Austin. I'll try it today and let you know. I did read all the
advises you gave. My problem seemed it just a link got lost. I thought it
may be some easy that I can just click on it. Anyway, let me try it first.

Austin, I am sad to say that it didn't solve my problem. I down loanded the
add-in and now showing up on my tool bar. Still, the clip will play
perfectly on the computer generated it in a slide show. When brought to
another computer, as soon as the slide hits, an "open" box pop up and asking
for the clip file. Then I hit enter as the clip is in the same folder of the
show, it plays. And then go on the next slide. I don't know if there are any
tricks. You guys are experts on these kinds things. Please help. Oh, do I
need to have my client to put in the add-in? I shouldn't right? That is the
whole idea of why I do the downloading!

Lets take it one step at a time. See comments in line.

Excellent.

slide show.

for the clip file.

This is the puzzling part. You should not get any sort of pop up at all.
Did you move the video clip along with the presentation to the receiving
computer? If not that is the problem. Media files are linked, not embedded
and they must be moved along with the presentation.
Oh, do I need to have my client to put in the add-in?

No, nothing except the presentation and the media clip needs to be moved.

Tell you what, drop me an email with a valid return email address and i'll
walk through it with you and see if we can find where the problem is.

Austin,
Thank you, thank you so very much! I finally got it. But I had to go to
another computer and kind of redo it again for the original computer I used
was giving up on me and I really had two bad hair nights and a day. I guess
that time I said it didn't work was the computer problem. I really
appreciate your help, you guys are really great. That downloand is cool!

Austin, one more question on the download. After I restored my computer
that cruched on me. I thought I got it back to where it was but when I used
the PFC tried to insert the clip. It said error 212 and it was not on the
user resolvable list. What is it? What I can do the make PFC work on this
paticular machin.

By the way, my presentation is first thing next Monday, oh I am going to
have fun. Thank you again.

Is there a way I send you an email address without posting it here?

Jan,

I have read all the replies to this original question. I saw your original
message when you first were trying to figure this out. My question to you
is, did you get this to work without downloading that software? If so, what
were your steps. Did you use the hyperlink process or did you Insert,
Object, Media Clip? I do not want to use the Insert, Movies and Sounds
option, because I want it to launch thru Windows media player. When you use
the Movies and Sounds option, you have to stretch the box as big as your
slide to get it to play full screen. By doing that, the default color of the
box is grey, therefore covering all of your text on the slide. It is not a
fill either. I went inot the fill bucket to choose no fill. It is greyed
out. I am currently trying your suggestion, creating a folder and moving the
..ppt file and .avi file in the same folder. I am burning it onto a CD now
and will test it on another machine. That is how this will be delivered on a
CD. The person that will be giving this presentation is not a computer wiz
and there is no way I will be able to instruct this person to load the CD,
launch My Computer, Browse to the CD_ROM drive, select the folder,
right-click, copy files, Browse to your C:\ and right-click and paste. There
is just no-way that will do..... LOL! Therefore, I need this puppy to run,
when inserting the CD. In short, what did you do to get yours to work?

Thanks,
lfranker-

I'm pretty sure the PPT 2003 Viewer doesn't support the Insert/Object/Media
Clip thing. (At least, it wouldn't when I tried it here in 2003 using a
sample WMV file and Package for CD.) You'll want to be aware of that if
you're creating an autorun CD that relies on the Viewer.

The PPT 97 Viewer seems to be okay with it, though.

Sorry for not answering you any sooner, I have been away for a while.
Answering your direct question to me: I haven't used any add-inns. It was PP
2000 with all current service packs. I used Insert -> movies and sounds->
movie from file. Used .avi, .mpg and .wmv files. The critical point is that,
as I said, the 'insert' command does not insert anything. It just tells PP
where your movie file is. To avoid probles one should have both the
presentation .ppt and the movie files in same folder and make sure the
recepient also has them both in the same folder. That takes care of the
basics.

On top of that there is a whole slough of issues with coding as Austin
wrote. One has to make sure that on the client machine (the recipient) the
codex used for coding your movie is installed. The problem is that when you
use a software to make your .avi file, it is usually difficult if not
impossible to find out exactly which of the many codices out there is being
used. I have recently had a lecture at a conference, made efforts to make
sure everything goes well and still run into a minor problem at the end.

Perhaps using Austin's add-inn is the only solution, but I have never tested
it.
