Powerpoint and Norton AV

V

Vassik

Every time I open or close a PowerPoint presentation Norton 2004 AV wants to
check it for viruses and that stalls the process of opening or closing.
In the Norton preferences I have UNchecked the Office Plug-in button but
this does not stop Norton! Is there anything else I can do to stop this?
Thanks

Did you reboot after you unchecked the Office Plug-in? that sometimes
helps....

Dear User,

Norton AntiVirus includes an option called the "Office Plug-in" and this
option, if activated, can cause many problems with Office installation and
operation. You'll want to disable it.

Disabling NAV doesn't disable the plug-in; you. In NAV go to Options. In the
Miscellaneous section turn off "Enable Office Plug-in".

Some NAV versions (CE for example) don't include the Office Plug-In, but a
previously installed version of Norton AV may have left the Office Plug-In
DLL installed, registered and active.

Use Windows Explorer to search for: officeav.dll

If you find it, click Start, click Run and type this:

regsvr32 /u "\officeav.dll"

then click OK

This will surely help you and your problem will not persist.

Hi and thanks for the suggestion .... I have tried this one already as well
and I get the following message: Loadlibrary ("office.dll") failed-The
specified module could not be found.

I am stumped!

I had the problem with Norton scanning PowerPoint - this
is what I found...
Go to AntiVirus Options/auto protect. check "scan files
using SmartScan"/customize. Here is where I removed
the .ppt extension from a long list. This worked until I
re-booted - the .ppt extension was right back on the
list. I am writing Norton tech support about it, am
seriously considering ditching Norton altogether.

You are right! I followed your suggestions and it worked until I rebooted
the computer, then it was back to scanning every time I open a presentation
causing delays. I do hope Symantec will post a fix and maybe if you hear
from them you can post it here for everyone's benefit.
Thanks

I'm using Norton SystemWorks 2004, Windows XP SP 1, and PowerPoint 97, 2000,
2002 and 2003. I followed the suggestion to delete a couple of file extensions
(.PPT and JPG) and then rebooted. They are permanently gone from the list, so
it works just fine for me. But then the scanning upon opening a presentation
file doesn't occur for me either.

Are you opening a file on a network drive? The NAV Help File states that file
exclusion is not supported over a network.

Also, are either of you running Windows XP SP2? Are you running with admin
privileges?

I am using SystemWorks 2004, XP SP2, PowerPoint 2002. I am administrator
and, while my computer is on a wireless home network, ppt files are not
shared. Looks like that network clause is the culprit, though.

I too am on a wireless network. Instead of suspecting that, I would suspect Win
SP 2 since Symantec published multiple emails about compatibility when it was
released and also has a major section about it on their website - -
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/. You might want to drop them a line and
describe the problem. Be sure to include all of the details about software
versions and what you've tried.

A question: Is this new behavior and did it start after you updated to SP 2?

L

L. Gutherie

That is a good question, but alas, I updated to SP2 and then subscribed to
Norton 2004 without using PPT in between. So I don't know. I will check
Symantec's site again, though think I remember when I purchased it reading
that there should be no problems if SP2 was already installed. That was the
sales page, though, not the tech support page. Should I report back?

Certainly if you find out anything helpful, it would be greatly appreciated if
you let us know. It will help others along the way, and that's how newsgroups
work - - sharing problems *and* solutions.

Hi and thanks for the follow up. This is stand alone computer, no network I
am the only user of this computer and the administrator plus I installed
Norton AV 2004 after SP2 so I could not tell you if the problem appeared
after the SP2. .

I tried the following a couple of hours ago and it seem to have helped:
In Norton under miscellaneous made sure that the "Enable office Plug In" is
unchecked, Rebooted the computer and then I followed the advise of L.
Guthrie again and removed the ppt, clicked ok and BEFORE opening again
PowerPoint I rebooted and that seem to have solved the problem so far today!
