"PowerPoint can't play the sound file...."

I've recently put a new hard drive in my old computer, reinstalled Windows XP
and MS Office 2003 on it. Now, when I create a new slide show and use a slide
transition sound file other than the standard (Applause, Arrow, Bomb, etc) I
get the above error, which contines to tell me that PP can only embed .wav
files, yada yada. If I try to use one of the above standards but attaching it
by selecting "Other sound..." the same error pops up. The message ends with
"Make sure this is a .wav audio file and that audio settings are configured
properly for your system." Don't know what that means (about system
configuration -- .wav files play properly in all other circumstances).

Any hints will be greatly appreciated. I've been using PowerPoint for years
and have never run across this. The installation on the previous hard drive
worked fine. Just this new installation is giving me the problem.

One more element might be the fact that by reinstalling Office on the new
hard drive I had exceeded by licensed allowance and had to speak to a
Microsoft rep (probably in Bombay) and explain the situation before I could
register the installation. I had not gone beyond the drop dead date for the
installation.

Did you, as part of the clean install, apply all the Windows and Office
updates? The Service Packs (SPs) fix an awful lot of PowerPoint woes. This
should be your first step.

Bill:

Thanks. I had done just that last night (SP2) and it cleared the problem.
Thanks for the answer, though. It would have squared me away right enough.

Pleasure doing business with you.)

Richard.
