Why is an exact copy of a PP pres. with notes, 3MB smaller than the copy
without notes?

If you have Fast Saves turned on and you deleted the notes from the presentation
to create the second version, that version will be larger. Go to Tools >
Options > Save and uncheck Fast Saves. Then open and save each presentation
with a new name and compare their sizes. The one without the notes will be
appropriately smaller.

Do you have Fast Saves turned on? Did you use Save As to save? If so,
that explains everything. If not, I dunno. With Fast Saves on, when you
make changes, the entire file isn't rewritten but information is added to
the file to let PowerPoint know what has changed. Even deleting things
from your presentation will cause an INCREASE in file size. By turning
Fast Saves off (in Tools > Options > Save), you always get a completely
rewritten file. If the file contains less stuff, the file can get
smaller. For this and other reasons, it is a good idea to turn Fast Saves
off.
