Is it possible to update or create links in Powerpoint to external Word and
Excel files and if yes, how?

Yes. I do it quite often. Simply go to "Insert" then choose "hyperlink".

You can browse and go to the document you want linked.

Here is a great tip though. Save the presentation as a Pack-N-Go. This way
it can be view by disk and all documents, etc will be linked in the
presenation.
