Please help if you can. Thank you,

You can download and install the PowerPoint Viewer. Then you can open one
of the attachments.

You don't need to download anything. You already have Powerpoint so
just go into Windows explorer, click Tools/Folder Options/File
Types/New and add .pps which points to your Powerpoint.exe

What is the full name of the file? Right click the file and select Properties.
Sometimes you'll get clues from that, especially from the Summary information.
Look at the Origin section. It might tell you what application created the
file.

Like Arlan I have Windows XP, Home edition, Windows Office and PowerPoint
(yes I have it, I have created presentations with it), and I have problems
opening *.pps attachments, in addition I have problems opening *.ppt
attachments. Here is more information:
Before I bought Office and PowerPoint, I had downloaded the PowerPoint
Viewer 2003, and this has worked great for the last year. After I installed
Office and PowerPoint (a) *.pps attachments open a File Download window, it
shows the File Name (*.ppt - yes it is a PowerPoint Presentation File Type)
etc. everything looks good, I click Open and nothing else happens. (b) *.ppt
attachments open a File Download window, it shows the File Name (*.ppt) etc.
everything looks good, I click Open and get a window that sayes"The page
cannot be displayed. The page you are looking for is currently
unavailable...." at the bottom of the page it sayes, "Cannot find server or
DNS Error Internet Explorer".
I have gone to My Computer/Explorer as discribed in one of Arlan's
responses (Tools/Folder Options/File Types) with the following results PPS =
Microsoft PowerPoint Slide Show and PPT = Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation.
I have thought about going back and Re-downloading the viewer, but (a) I
should still have the 2003 copy and (b) it sayes on the download page that
this download is for those who do not have PowerPoint, which I now have.
All of my other attachments (pdf, jpeg, xls) were not impacted by my loading
Windows Office, only PowerPoint.
Can anyone help me out?
Please and Thank you.

I can't find the original message thread for this, but hopefully it was
mentioned in a response that Windows XP SP-2 causes a situation where PPT
files cannot be opened in the PPT Viewer directly from an email program. The
workaround is to save the file to your harddrive and then open it.

That said, since you now have PPT, I'd guess that your file associations are
still specifying the PPT Viewer to open the files. Try this FAQ -- Changing
a File Association http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00355.htm -- to
resolve it.

Thanks Echo S
I don't have Windows XP SP-2 yet, so I can't blame that yet.
I went to the site recomended, looks great. I tried all three 'fixes'
listed and still have no success. Looks like I will have to "save and open
from Explorer". Sheesh.
Does anyone know if it would hurt to reload the Viewer, even though I have
PowerPoint installed?
Thanks

Reloading the Viewer, even with PPT installed, won't hurt. I have both the
old 97 PPT Viewer and the new 2003 PPT Viewer here on this system with PPT
2000 and 2003 both installed. And I'm sure I installed the Viewers after I
installed both versions of PPT full program.

Which email client are you using? There could be a security patch on it that
prevents opening PPT files directly.

What program do you use to read your mail?

You may need to download and install the PowerPoint 2003 Viewer from

if you don't have PowerPoint installed.

Do you have PowerPoint on your computer?

What program do you use for email?

As Sonia said, you may just need to download the PowerPoint Viewer and
install it.

But if you're using Windows XP SP-2 with just the PowerPoint Viewer, you may
not be able to open attachments directly from the email program. If that's
the case, the easiest solution is to save the attachment to your computer
and then double-click it there to open it.

responses (Tools/Folder Options/File Types) with the following results
PPS
=
Microsoft PowerPoint Slide Show and PPT = Microsoft PowerPoint
Presentation.
I have thought about going back and Re-downloading the viewer, but (a)
I
should still have the 2003 copy and (b) it sayes on the download page
that
this download is for those who do not have PowerPoint, which I now
have.
All of my other attachments (pdf, jpeg, xls) were not impacted by my
loading
Windows Office, only PowerPoint.
Can anyone help me out?
Please and Thank you.

I have Windows XP, Home edition, Windows Office and Powerpoint.
When I try to open *.pps messages attached to incoming e-mail, I get
the

Please help if you can. Thank you,

Changing a File Association
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00355.htm

Even after you fix the file association, you may still have to save the PPS
file to your harddrive before you can open it.

What program do you use to read your mail?

You may need to download and install the PowerPoint 2003 Viewer from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=428d5727-43ab-4f24-
90b7-a94784af71a4&DisplayLang=en
if you don't have PowerPoint installed.

I am very new to this (see profile). I have the same problem (opening
attachments with .pps) My problem is all your answeres are for people who
know what they are doing and that surely excludes me. My computor is new and
I probably do not have any programs you mention.

:

Reloading the Viewer, even with PPT installed, won't hurt. I have both the
old 97 PPT Viewer and the new 2003 PPT Viewer here on this system with PPT
2000 and 2003 both installed. And I'm sure I installed the Viewers after I
installed both versions of PPT full program.

Which email client are you using? There could be a security patch on it that
prevents opening PPT files directly.

Thanks Echo S
I don't have Windows XP SP-2 yet, so I can't blame that yet.
I went to the site recomended, looks great. I tried all three 'fixes'
listed and still have no success. Looks like I will have to "save and
open
from Explorer". Sheesh.
Does anyone know if it would hurt to reload the Viewer, even though I have
PowerPoint installed?
Thanks

:

I can't find the original message thread for this, but hopefully it was
mentioned in a response that Windows XP SP-2 causes a situation where
PPT
files cannot be opened in the PPT Viewer directly from an email program.
The
workaround is to save the file to your harddrive and then open it.

That said, since you now have PPT, I'd guess that your file associations
are
still specifying the PPT Viewer to open the files. Try this FAQ --
Changing
a File Association http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00355.htm -- to
resolve it.

Like Arlan I have Windows XP, Home edition, Windows Office and
PowerPoint
(yes I have it, I have created presentations with it), and I have
problems
opening *.pps attachments, in addition I have problems opening *.ppt
attachments. Here is more information:
Before I bought Office and PowerPoint, I had downloaded the PowerPoint
Viewer 2003, and this has worked great for the last year. After I
installed
Office and PowerPoint (a) *.pps attachments open a File Download
window,
it
shows the File Name (*.ppt - yes it is a PowerPoint Presentation File
Type)
etc. everything looks good, I click Open and nothing else happens. (b)
*.ppt
attachments open a File Download window, it shows the File Name
(*.ppt)
etc.
everything looks good, I click Open and get a window that sayes"The
page
cannot be displayed. The page you are looking for is currently
unavailable...." at the bottom of the page it sayes, "Cannot find
server
or
DNS Error Internet Explorer".
I have gone to My Computer/Explorer as discribed in one of Arlan's

I have the same problem viewing the email with attached pps files. I tried
downloading the viewer (didn't work) I have office 2003 on my computer. All
the discussions seem the same with no true fix. Any help would be appreciated

This one's actually a bit complicated to fix.

http://tinyurl.com/8wdlc -- this is a Google Groups thread. You want to read
the fix John Langhans (MSFT) posted on Nov. 29, 2004. That's the only fix
I'm aware of. He offers workarounds elsewhere in that thread also.
