PowerPoint or a 2 to 3 page essay?

I'm in on-line college and I've been searching for tips that have to do with
when to use PowerPoint or write an essay instead. Is there any research out
there about that? What is your view on this?

More than twelve words per slide, I suppose?

Then you are not doing slides, but prose,
Stick it in Word, and PowerPoint, close.
