[PPT 2002-2003] Assigning a keyboard shortcut to the Task Pane

Jeff Chapman

Just wanted to share another tip on hiding or showing
the Task Pane using the keyboard in PowerPoint 2002
(I think this should work the same way in PPT 2003).
It's a keyboard shortcut for the Task Pane without
macros!

1. Right-click on any toolbar, and select Customize.
2. On the PowerPoint menu bar, click on the View menu to
open it, and then do a CTRL-click on the "Task Pane"
phrase in the menu. While holding the left mouse
button down, drag the word out and onto another
menu bar of your choice. (Caution: Don't put it
inside of a menu, or it will require 2-3 keystrokes
to use. Put it on a toolbar instead, or create a new toolbar
for your new button if you like.)
3. Do a right click on the new button that you have made
and place the ampersand "&" BEFORE the letter that
you want to use as the keyboard shortcut.
(Careful: if another menu bar displayed on the screen
is already using the same shortcut key, you will
have to rename the word "Task Pane" to something
else. (I put the ampersand before the "k" in Task.)
4. Clcik "Close" on the Customize pane.

Now, when you type ALT+[your shortcut key], the
Task Pane will automatically appear or disappear at
your command!

If you like, you can add your own image to the button.
Or, you can download and use the button that I made at
http://www.japchap.com/powerpoint/Buttons/taskpane_btn.bmp.
When you have downloaded the image in your browser,
do a right-click on it, copy it to the clipboard, return to
PowerPoint, and then before step 4 above, do a
right-click on your new Task Pane button and select
Paste Button Image.
Make sure that you also have "Image and Text" checked
on that right-click menu.
