OK the subject just about says it all. Except I'd like to maintain the
numbering.

This depends on the version of PowerPoint and the flow you want to follow
(a1, b1, a2, b2 -or- a1, a2, b1, b2).

Animations (and their application) vary significantly over the versions of
PowerPoint, so this info is critical to getting a solution that works.

We have MS office professional edition 2003. I used the title and two column
layout due to the length of my list.

I've got 2003 Professional Edition, and the list got too long for one slide.
I switched to title and two column text layout, and have yet to figgure out
how to maintain the bullets. In this case I'm tyring to une numbers.

If you are using the 2 column layout then ...

Select the text box for the first column, right click, select custom
animation, click Add Effect => Entrance and pick one from the list. You
should see small numbers appear next to the list items on the slide. If
only the number 1 appears, then select the animation, click on the pulldown
arrow on the right, select timing, click on the 'Text animation' tab of the
dialog box that pops up, and change the 'Group Text' field to 'By 1st level
paragraphs'.

If you get a series of animation queue numbers down the first textbox, then
repeat the process for the second text box.

This should do it for you, but if you need addition assistance, please post
back.

After you set up the numbering, right click the placeholder for the second
list. From the right click menu, select "Bullets and Numbering". The window
should pop up with the numbering tab active. At the lower right you will see
a drop down list for "Start at". Set that number to one greater than the
last number in the other column, then click ok. Your second column will now
work the way you want. (And, no - I don't know any way to do this
automatically - Sorry.)
