PPT2003 multiple masters working ... sometimes

D

dusty

It's me again! (And, yes, Service pac 1 [or whatever it's called] has been
installed.)
This time, a more complex problem. We've successfully created multiple
masters in 2003. So, making sure these new masters were a .pot file, I opened
an old slide show, browsed for the new templates and brought them into the
Slide Design view. Then I opened the thumbnail view, selected slides and
clicked "apply to selected slides" from one of the masters. Cool -- worked.
Did it a few more times, and problems started to emerge.
1. When trying to apply the Title Master, I got a pop-up window that said
that there were multiple masters connected to this slide; did I want to bring
them in? I said "yes" even though they were already there. So they
duplicated. So I deleted the duplicates. Triad to apply the Title Master
again, this time checking "no." Poof! All the formatting of the slides I'd
already applied other masters to disappeared.
2. "Undoed" that "issue" and tried applying the Title Master again, this
time just X-ing the pop-up box. No go.
3. Gave up on that problem to address others; e.g. text color isn't stable
from master to applied slide -- text color turns to title color, etc. and
placeholder position changes.
4. Even on the masters that seemed to "work right," on further inspection,
title position on one or two had changed from master placeholder.
There's probably more that I'm not aware of -- just closed down the test
machine to give someone else a chance to have as much fine as I'm having --
lol.

further testing on the problems below -- find that we have to create title
masters for various text masters so that they will work right -- is that the
way to do it? Also, found that "reapply" solves part of problem #4 below, it
only works some of the time -- clicking "reapply" over and over again won't
budge certain slides!

ah, yes, the title masters. That sounds right. I've been trying to figure
out a way to check some of the things in your post, but I haven't made it
that far yet today. :)

Re #4
Are you reapplying a slide layout to the slide itself, or are you reapplying
something on the master?

We're reapplying to an individual slide. For example, new "slide master #1"
has title placeholder set horizontally at "x" and vertically at "y" and
bullet placeholder set horizontally at "a" and vertically at "b." So in slide
sorter view, we're clicking on specific slides, and applying "slide master
#1" settings. Because the "old" slide show has had text boxes shifted around
in the past, some of the formatting of new "slide master #1" isn't "sticking"
to the "old" slide show. "Reapply" sometimes fixes this, but sometimes
doesn't.
Hope that clarifies that issue.
Here's a new "related" one:
We now think we have to create title masters to link with every new slide
master we create. For example, we have a slide master for "quiz" and a title
master for "quiz" (which introduces the quiz section). However, we're finding
we have to have title master for "example" and "discussion", etc. because we
have slide masters designed for those categories. I hope I haven't confused
the issue further.
(BTW, I'm not using "we" because I'm some kind of princess [don't I wish],
but because this is a group all working on one test computer while we test
our migration from 2000 to 2003.)
If I've totally confused the issue, you can throw up your virtual hands and
send me on my way <g>

Yeah, it does. Thanks!

Sometimes you have to hit reapply twice in order for it to "take."

If that doesn't do it (it always has in my experience, but if it doesn't
there for some reason), try applying a different layout and then applying
the original layout again.

If the slide didn't use the title and text placeholders, though, no amount
of reapplying anything is going to make a difference.
Here's a new "related" one:
We now think we have to create title masters to link with every new slide

the issue further.

You can create a slide master with no title master, but you cannot create a
title master with no slide master.

You should be able to go to View/Normal [do it twice -- the 2nd time should
say View/Normal (restore panes)], then go to View/Master/Slide Master. Click
your mouse between slides in the slide thumbnail pane on the left. Now use
Insert/New Slide Master. Format as you wish, right-click and name Example.
Repeat for Discussion.

Personally, I'd probably go ahead and set up a connected title slide anyway
because if I didn't, I'd end up needing it later. It never fails. <g>

I'm not sure about this:
So if you create a title master for these "loose" slide masters, what
exactly is it that now works right?
(BTW, I'm not using "we" because I'm some kind of princess [don't I wish],

LOL! You said the other day there's a group of you testing. The princess
thought hadn't even crossed my mind! :)
If I've totally confused the issue, you can throw up your virtual hands and

Nah. You've been good about clarifying what you're doing, so we'll (I'm a
princess <g>) stick with it.

Thanks. That really helps. We're moving on to the next set of "issues," so
I'll probably be checking in again soon!
