Precedence question

Shant Michaelian

Ok, I don't know if this his possible...

I have two tasks:

Task1
Task2

Task2's precedence is Task1. Let's say it takes Task1 4 days to
complete and Task2 has to begin only when Task1 is complete. So if
Task1 takes 6 days, Task2's start date and bar in the Gantt Chart
should move to the right. I can't get this to happen.

What usually happens is that Task1's bar completion runs over the start
of Task2's bar and the arrow snakes around to the start of Task2.

How can I have Task2's start change when Task1 is late?

Hi Shant,

You will need to set task 1 as the predecessor to task 2. Select task 1 and
task 2, click the "Link Tasks" button in the Standard toolbar.

Track work for Task 1 and set the actual duration to 4 days and the
remaining duration to 2 days. This should extend the duration of task 1 to
6 days and push out the successor task (Task 2) to start at the projected
end of Task 1.

Make sure that Task 2 doesn't have any constraints and your calculation
(Tools > Options, Calculation tab) is set to automatic.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Have you set a constraint on Task 2? What you describe is very often caused
by putting a "must finish no later than" constraint on the task to model a
deadline. Use a deadline entry instead.
