why does my background change on all the slides instead of just one?

What are your doing? Changing the background to a slide and applying the
change to all slides, or changing the template?

What are you doing to change the background? If you change the background in
the slide master, it will change on all slides. If you check the box for
"Apply to All Slides" it will affect all slides. Also, tell us what version
of PowerPoint you are using.

Are you clicking the button that just says "Apply" and not the one "Apply to
All"? Also, are you in the "Normal" View Mode?

just "apply" after i do that all the slide along the left column change not
just the one

Are you right clicking to change the background action on the actual slide,
or on the thumbnails on the left? Could all slides be selected somehow when
you click Apply?

yes i'm right clicking on the slide to change it. i don't think i have them
all selected

Use apply option ,not apply to all.
