preventing animation on master slide from applying to picture

Is there a way to apply animation to text via the master slide, but turn it
off for certain elements which appear on the slide - mainly pictures and
diagrams.

Using PPT 2002-2003 open the CUSTOM ANIMATION PANE, you will see an
animation for the text box, but it is uneditable. Highlight the animation
and then click the black chevron/triangle and choose COPY EFFECTS TO SLIDE.
Now the animations are editable. They can be changed or deleted as needed.
