What exactly do you expect the PrintScreen key to do?
It only copies the current screen (or the active screen if you use
Alt+PrintScreen) to the clipboard.
You then need to paste it in an application like Paint or Word.

Please look at Help and Support for "print screen" in your operating
system.
This is from XP help, but it has worked the same since Win95.
-------------------
To copy the window or screen contents
To make a copy of the active window, press ALT+PRINT SCREEN.
To copy the entire screen as it appears on your monitor, press PRINT
SCREEN.
Note

To paste the image into a document, click the Edit menu in the
document window, and then click Paste.
