Probably a stupid question

The current date is automatically filled in on any
letters I compose. If I try to date it differently it
switches back to the current before saving or printing.
I know there's a "switch" to give control of the date
back to the user but just don't know where to look.
Pardon me for asking such a basic question but it's
making me crazy. I use Microsoft Word 2002 for Windows
XP...

Either use a CreateDate field which is the date the document is created and
stays that way, or use plain text if you need to enter an arbitrary date.
