Problem finding printers on XP machine with Access 2002

Greg de Bruin

I just got a new laptop a few months ago, with Office 2002 installed. I
went to the Printers and Faxes screen and added all of our network printers
(about ten of them).

When I use Word or Excel and go to Print, I see all the installed printers
and can print to any one of them. Some of the printers in the print dialog
box have full UNC names and others appear as more English language style
names.

When I use Access, or even Adobe Acrobat, I only see a few of the printers -
the ones that don't appear as UNC names. For instance, on one server we
have 6 printers and only one is visible in Access. The name of that one is
"Xerox N32 PCL6 on FS-AJD04". One of the printers that doesn't appear is
called \\FS-AJD04\Xerox N32 PS. The other 4 that don't appear all have the
UNC format in their names as they appear on my XP workstation print dialog
box.

Any idea why I can't see the UNC printers, just in certain programs? Any
idea how to rename the UNC printers to look like the ones that work? I set
them all up a while ago and I don't recall doing anything different on one
printer than I did on the others.
