Problem installing Office 2003 on Vista

I just purchased a new laptop with Vista Home Premium o/s. I was told by the
retailer that Vista would work with my programs that are on my XP. I have
been trying to install Windows Office 2003 on my laptop. I keep getting
"Installation Error: File not found" the screen keeps asking for various cab
files. The screen also indicates I should look for it on by browsing
"Original Installation Source Required". The CD I am using is the original.
I have tried changing the compatiblity and running as the administrator. I
receive an error message looking for cab files and stating an error code 2350.

Is there a patch or something I need to complete the installation? Can you
help me?

If your new laptop came with a trial version of Office 2007 preinstalled
by the computer manufacturer, then you need to uninstall the trial
software before you install your copy of Office 2003.

Otherwise, pretend we can't see your screen from here and quote the
error messages you see exactly and completely (not just the parts you
think are important, or your vague recollection of what the error
messages may or may not have said in part, or what you think the error
messages meant, or...).

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. As you suggested, I
uninstalled the trial version of Office 2007. I again tried to install my
Office Basic Edition 2003, using my original disk. I ran the installation as
administrator and checked the option to "run this program in compatibilty
mode for Windows XP(service pack 2).
This is the error message I got: "INSTALLATION ERROR: FILE NOT FOUND
A required installation file CD561401.CAB could not be found"
Then the next message is: "ORIGINAL INSTALLATION SOURCE REQUIRED
If you installed Microsoft Office Basic Edition 2003 from a CD, please
insert your CD. If you installed Microsoft Office Basic Edition 2003 over
your network, please browse to the installation source on your network. Once
you havve located your installation source, click ok." They have a box with
E:\ and a button "Browse". Below that they have butons "OK" and "CANCEL"
This laptop is not on a network.

During the time I was attempting to install Office 2003, the CD WAS in the
drive. The computer can read the drive, so I know that is not the problem.
IS there some step I am missing? Or a patch that needs to be downloaded?
They said installing Office 2003 on Vista was not a problem. Do I need to
change operqating systems to run my programs??? Please.. Please.. is there
any help for this problem?

Office 2003 Basic Edition is an OEM-only edition, which means it should
have come preinstalled on your old computer by the computer
manufacturer, and you cannot install the software on a second computer
or transfer the software to another computer.

,Well.. I am not sure I understand that response or how that solves my
problem. First of all, I paid extra for office 2003 when I purchased the
desktop, second , and most important, the cd I am using is NEW. I opened it
for the first time when I tried to use it, so that cd was NOT installed on
anything.

The other problem that arose is that I tried to install a Corporate Edition
on the laptop my employer lent me since I do research papers for them. I
received basically the same message when trying to install that Office
program. Vista keeps looking for cab files and gave Error 2350. Seems Vista
needs a patch or something to make the 2003 programs work.

What is the solution I need to do? Where can I go to find out how to make
my XP programs work? I still need to install Quickbooks 2006 & 2007 versions
for work, but I am not sure what will happen with them on Vista.

Sorry.. I posted the ending of my response to your answer. This is the end
of my response to my previous submission.

What garfield-n-odie is saying is that your Office 2003 CD is made available to you by the manufacturer of your computer. This Office 2003 Basic version that you have is not available to the public for purchase from any computer retailer. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.
After saying this I recommend to you to delete all Office apps that youhave installed on your computer including the corporate version and the Basic version.
After a successful removal of all Office installs disable your Anti Virus and all Security settings and go into Safe mode and then install the Office 2003 Basic Edition that you purchased with your computer but not before doing the following steps as I have described above


1. Close all the applications.
2. Click on Start->Run, type in REGEDIT and click on OK.
3. Locate and select the following registry subkeys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0

4. Right click on 11.0 and rename them to Old11.
5. Close the Registry Editor.

2nd. Detect and Repair Office 2003


1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Click Change/Remove Programs on the left pane.
4. Highlight Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 on the right pane
and click Change.
5. Insert the correct version of CD when it requires.
6. Select “Reinstall and Repair†and click Next.
7. Select “Detect and Repair errors in my Office installationâ€.
8. Click Install and wait the process to end.

3rd. Install the Office 2003 Basic as I have written above

thank you for your timely response. I do appreciate it. After reading your
instructions and advice, I called a software place and ordered Microsoft
Office Professional 2007. They were able to explain to me how I can save my
documents to read on Office 2003, which is to save as a .rdf file. I hope
installing this program will be user friendly. If I have difficulty, I shall
return.. lol
I wanted to give you and Garfield a positive rating for your response and
assistance, but I cannot fine where to do this. You both answered my
questions timely and very profession.

Hello,
I am having a similar problem as Paula with my Office Student and Teacher
edtion 2003 only with slightly different symptoms.

My vista system has 3 user accounts and on two of them I get the same error
messages as Paula when I try to run the program. On the other account which
I used to do the install I am having no problems and no error messages.

I purchased the software from a store. I uninstalled the trial version of
Office 2007 first. I installed Office 2003 SP3 to see if that would solve
the problem. No Luck.

Does anyone think that earlier proposed solution will work in my situation?
Any suggestions would be helpful.

I had somewhat similar problem when I bought a new laptop with Vista on it
and tried to install my old Office 2003 (Student/small business) version from
the same CD I had installed it just a couple of months ago on my old XP PC.

The error message I got was (translated, as the original one was in Finnish):
Installation error: file not found, file ZT561401.CAB was not found and then
the installation was requesting installation media (which according to my
understanding already was in E: drive).

After ending reading the questions and answers in this thread I tried what
someone here suggested to use Regedit and rename there for Office some
entries from 11.0 to Old11 and then I tried the installation again and it
worked.

In my case I did not have to remove any Office2007 trial versions or any
other Office installations and regarding the things proposed to be renamed
from 11.0 to Old11 I only had one of them.

I just thought I'd post this in case someone else still encounters these
problems, to document that this problem can have also a slightly different
appearance but that for me the regedit helped with it.

Without knowing what you've tried What happens when you copy the CD contents to your hard drive and install from there?

Did you have an incomplete Office install at some point and shutdown the computer?

I tried copying the contents of the Cd to my hard drive and installing it
that way and it did not work at all. When installing it from the CD i get to
the point where the installation begins to extract files from the CD and i
get error messages stating that cabinet files (.CAB) are missing. At that
point I've been aborting the installation. Thanks!

I am getting a similar error message but I purchased mine independently of my
computer, so it should have nothing with a problem with the software. It is
saying a file ending in .dll is missing. I had no problems installing with
XP home edition. Can anyone help? I don't have money to buy Office 2007

rebooted?
