Problem moving Excel Window to externalmonitor configured vertically

I did a search on this and didn't see anything.

I'm trying to help a friend who is a new Mac user troubleshoot an issue he's having with Mac Excel 2008. When he tries to drag an Excel spreadsheet to an external monitor that is configured vertically above his Macbook screen it doesn't work. I have a similar setup with the external monitor configured horizontally and it works fine.

I don't have any idea. I use this configuration all the time with Excel
windows on an external monitor positioned above the PB display. I doubt if
it is an update issue with either Excel or the OS, as this has been working
perfectly for me for a very long time, through many updates of both.
