Problem: <product> not installed for the current user

Les

I'm suddenly getting the message "xxx has not been installed for the current
user. Please run setup to install the application" on all office (XP
Professional 2002)products. Running setup again has no effect. There's only
1 user on the machine [XP Professional] & it has administrator privileges.

Help!

I ran into this problem and I tried many of the suggestion found in the user
groups as well as the knowledge base article like Article ID 898512:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;898512

However, like you I have an admin account and that article and/or
reinstalling didn't help. In my case, Visio and Project both didn't work but
everything else like Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. all did work.

To solve the problem, I ended up with these steps:

1) Diabled anti-virus software.
2) Uninstalled both Visio and Project. (The problem applications in my
case)
3) I renamed the entire folder “C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\†to something else so that
these files would be re-installed.
4) Reinstalled Visio, then applied the service packs at the office
update web site.
5) Reinstalled Project, then applied the service packs at the office
update web site.

I had to re-activate all office applications when I started them up, but
they all worked and the bad error message went away.

Hope is help you, or at least those who come later...

Thanks for the reply, but I'm afraid I'd tried this with no luck.

I had to set up a new user to get Office to work again - highly inconvenient!!

I have the exact same problem as les. Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't
help, removing reg keys doesn't help either. Some questions to les if he
doesn't mind:

How did you manage it to work again with just adding a new user? Does it
work with both users now or only the new one? Do both of them have
administrator privileges?

Thanks.

I added a new user with administrator privileges. Office then worked for the
new user - it showed an 'installation' dialog on the first run. This didn't
remove the problem for the original user, so I now have 2 with administrator
privileges.

I could set up all my other software to run under the new user & delete the
original, but this would take a lot of effort & I don't use Office very much.

I feel the key to the solution is deep inside the registry - the
installation process on first run for the new user probably set up a new set
of the necessary keys for that user, which must have been corrupted for the
original user.

Of course, the real question which hasn't been answered is how the problem
was caused in the first place!!!

Hope that helps.
