Problem with Entourage 2004 - Entourage constantly crashes

I'm back again, sorry for the delay. The link you posted didn't go anywhere.

Looks like the forum software corrupted the long URL.

Try this tiny URL.

Also, as I said before I am really not very computer savy so can you
give me > complete step by step instructions to do what you said above?
And which > identity folder am I removing.

In your Documents folder you'll find the Microsoft User Data folder. Inside
the MUD folder is your Office 2004 Identities. Move your Identity named
"Main" by default to the desktop. Open Entourage and it will create a
new blank Main Identity. This will tell you if it is Entourage or a problem
in your User's folder or your OS files.

If you have more Identities, I would remove them all. Just drag back to
overwrite the blank one.

Also when you say I need a lot of space on my > computer, do you mean
that the program itself will take up a lot of room or > just the rebuilding
process?

The rebuilding process takes a lot of room. I offer the service to rebuild
Identities if you do not have the physical room to do them yourself. Recovering
a database is very time consuming and I do charge for it. The last one
I did took over 12 hrs to recover all the data and transfer it to a new
Identity.

OK when I dragged the main identity folder to my desktop my entourage opened without the pinwheel spinning infinately. so which is my problem, entourage, user's folder, or OS files? should i just delete the main identity folder?

It's your Identity. You can try rebuilding to see if that helps.

1. In the Finder make a backup copy of your database for added security.
2. Open Entourage with option key down and select rebuild.

It's possible the rebuild will fail if it's severely corrupted. Your only
choice would be to start with a new Identity. Unless you can open an
Identity you cannot salvage any data.

what do you mean salvage any data? i thought all the emails are from their respective websites (hotmail, etc) i haven't used entourage for almost a year so i really don't care about any data that is on there that i can just get back again if i make a new account or something. is there a way to just completely delete the old account and start a new one? do you think that would help the problem?

If you do no have any POP accounts, then delete the Identity and start with
a new one.

Frankly, it's very confusing trying to help. Your details are very
confusing.

A number of times I get e-mails where part of the text is unreadable. This is at the initial receipt. When I reply to the e-mail, I can read it. How do I fix this font issue?

Also, the Junk Mail folder doesn't work. I get an error when the system tries to load an e-mail into the folder, there's a bit of hesitation, then the e-mail shows up in my inbox, highlighted as spam. I don't recall messing with any of the settiings, so......?

I transferred the entourage database to a new MacBook Pro from an older MacBook Pro. When clicking on some new messages in the "inbox" the application shuts completely off with no warning or indication of error before or after. The messages have all had attachments but not all messages with attachments are a problem - only a very few. If I select help in the help menu the same thing hapens and the application shuts down. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you using the same version of Entourage as before or did you upgrade
from Office X to Office 2004 during the process?

Did you transfer your preferences? If you drag your Identity to Shared then
switch to a new User in System Preferences, drag from Shared to the new
Documents folder, does it work?

I have problems signing into my BT openworld email account when I try to access via Entourage 2004, it used to work OK. I upgraded to Mac X operating system earlier in the year it was OK then. I can get access to my emails through BT Yahoo. Any help appreciated.

It's possible too that they just upgraded their servers and you will need to
change the port in SMTP to 587.

Entourage Problems
Couldn't solve my Entourage 2004 and Leopard problem (crashing). Spent 2 hrs at genius bar (they were helpful).... hard drive is fine..... Went ahead and installed Office 2008..... still can't get Entourage to allow send/receive.

At this point I only have 1 email "Welcome to Entourage 2008" (8/5/08)
Old emails stored under Microsoft user data (for future merge -couldn't get it to work while installing office 2008).

Really needs emails for kids / school ASAP
POP server mail.yahoo.com SMTP server SMTP.yahoo.com

Thanks

Yahoo now uses secure connections. Have you changed your POP settings to match what Yahoo suggests? Also, I think your settings are wrong. Try these:

Incoming: pop.mail.yahoo.com. Enter your user name and password.
Make sure to also in the advanced settings to turn ON SSL, and make sure the port is set to 995 (the standard for SSL)

Outgoing: smtp.mail.yahoo.com. Enter your user name and password. Make sure that SSL is on and the port is set to its default of 465.

Lastly, while I have updated to Office 2008, I DO NOT use the 2008 Entourage, but rather continue to use the 2004 version. It is MUCH more stable (especially on Intel machines) and much much faster.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the first suggestions.... I've made them but still problems

1) from Entourage / Account settings I do not have a password showing up under receiving mail / passwords (it's blank)
Can't seem to add a password there (not sure what happened to it)

2) My printer says it's offline???? It is connected by cable. From HP set-up assistant it says "shared memory service not created yet.

Any more suggestions...thanks

Panda update! Entourage is WORKING! just followed link for
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/accounts/index.html>
Great!!

Do you have a link for the printer? HP PSC 1610
Should I just reinstall my printer driver.... Did Office 2008 cause problem

This solution was posted on the Office list today:

To be helpful I found the solution (other people have solved similar
problems in other ways) -- but go to folder:

/Library/Printers/PPD Plugins

and trash the HP plugins in this folder and restart Word and printing to HP
printers should be fine.

You can follow that thread under subject: Word & Entourage crashing when
Print is selected.
