Yeah, there have been a few complaints about footnotes not working in
documents converted from WordPerfect...but I don't remember solutions.
Anyone else?
From the original file in WordPerfect, save as RTF, then open in Word, is
probably the best option if possible.
If there are tons of footnotes and you're desperate, here are the things I
would try, but I'm completely brainstorming...does Word recognize the notes
at all? If you use Edit | Go To, Footnote, click Next, does Word recognize
the existing notes as Footnotes? If you select a footnote number, is it
formatted in Footnote Reference style? Conceivably saving as RTF, then
opening back up in Word, or doing the same thing but saving as HTML might
kick Word back into recognizing them...
But you say "completely screwed up" which suggests there are other problems
than not renumbering?
Could also try the corrupt doc fixes...
The first way to check for a corrupt document is to
copy the entire thing, *excluding* the last paragraph mark, into a new
document. That last paragraph mark holds a lot of information which can get
corrupted, and copying the text into a document with a fresh one keeps your
formatting, but can fix some glitches.
A paragraph mark is a gray ¶. Click on ¶ on the standard toolbar to show
nonprinting characters, including paragraph marks.
