Problems encountered using the DCOUNT function to analyse large databases

Hi all,

I have tried searching for topics commenting on the same problem I have
hadwith no avail.
I am using the DCOUNT formula to count entries in a spreadsheet with
certain criteria.
(=DCOUNT(database,field,criteria))

The problem is the range that I choose as my database spans about 30
columns,
i.e the first field I choose to add a condition on is column A and
other conditions are found in the last column.

I have found that Excel has a problem searching through such a large
database,
basically it doesn't work...

Has anyone else ever come accross this problem and / or could anyone
think of a suitable workaround??

Am I right to think that Excel has this limitation?

Any help appreciated on this one as it is proving a stumbling block in
what has been a successful project so far

I used a database 50 columns by 10000 rows with criteria in the first and
last column.

No problem

I don't think there is such a limitation on columns. Perhaps your formula
or criteria isn't set up properly.

Hi Tom,

The only thing I can think of is that my formula refers to a sheet in
another workbook?
Is the use of your DCOUNT function inside one workbook?

I will go away and scrutinise my criteria region, but I am sure it is
correct.

Many Thanks

I moved both the criteria range and the formula to another workbook and
adjusted the items to refer to the proper source data base in the original
workbook and it worked for me.
