problems with exchange server logon

Hello,

I am having trouble configuring outlook 2003 to connect
with exchange server at my office. When I put in the
username such as xxxyyyy, the dialog box in outlook adds
extra information to the username: ex: Ian243\xxxyyyy
and then the login fails.

Where is the program getting this incorrect information
and how can I prevent it?
