Profiles overwrite POP & SMTP settings

I have several users who use their laptops both in the office and away
from the office to access email.

Inside the office we simply access email from an external mail server
via a gateway PC on the network (running wingate), so the POP and SMTP
settings for the "Office" Profile are:
pop = 192.168.abc.xyz
smtp = 192.168.abc.xyz

Outside of the office we access email using dial-up directly to the
external mail server, so the POP and SMTP settings for the "Out of
Office" Profile are:
pop = mail.ourdomain.com
smtp = smtp.ispdomain.com

The PROBLEM we always have is this, and it happens using Outlook 2000
and 2002:
1) when you create the first profile, everything works fine;
2) then you create the second profile, and everything works fine there
too;
3) then you go back to use the first profile, and you find that the
POP and SMTP settings are those of the second profile, so you have to
change them back so that it works on the network in the office;
4) then you leave the office and choose the second profile only to
find that the POP and SMTP settings are those of the first profile, so
you have to change them back so that it works when you dial up the
ISP.

....and so on, whatever profile you use last overwrites the pop and
smtp settings of the previous profile.

Does anyone out there know how to overcome this annoying problem?

(fyi, the user always logs on to to pc using the same windows user
name/profile.)
