Project 2002 Published Fields - Issue with Remaining hours field.

Rhammia Immanuel

I am using Standalone version of Project 2002 and I use Request progress
information using Email workgroup as we are not using Project server.

My question is how do I protect the Remaining hours field in the email I
send to resources or not even display them. I go into Tools, customize,
published fields and not able to remove the Remaining hours field from the
Task view.

Would appreciate any help that I could get.

Thank you.

Hi Rhammia ,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I don't think you can - I may be wrong! However, why ever would you want to
do this? The best way to progress any task is to enter the work done and
work remaining, leaving Project to calculate percentages, etc. Thus, work
remaining is very important and the resource needs to know what he has left
to do.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Thank you Mike for the response. I do not want the resources to go ahead and
adjust the remaining time as it messes with all our planning, %completes..
and other critical EVM fields.

Why do we need a PM to manage the plan and the schedule if resources were
allowed to change whatever they want. I think Microsoft Project has this bug
and yet to be fixed.

Can you ask any of your contacts and let me know how I can get this to NOT
display in the email the resources get for Progress reporting.

This is so critical to the way we run our process.

Thanks so much.

Hi Rhammia,

You're welcome. It is not a bug, it is designed that way to allow PMs to
manage their projects realistically and accurately. Why deceive yourselves?
If a resource reports a 100 hour task as having done 90 hours and has 30
hours left to do, why get him to report that he has only 10 hours to do? It
won't make the task finish any quicker and would just be disception. I
think that's a recipe for disaster.

All my contacts read these newsgroups :) I wonder what they think?

Mike,
I would want the resource to just report the hours he or she
has worked on the task and we will do the scheduling and the planning for
more hours or days.

Would appreciate if you could find out where in Project 2002 it can be
protected just like the way it is in Project Web Access 2003.

Thanks.

Hi Rhammia ,

You'll need to ask that question in the server newsgroup. Please see FAQ
