Project 2003 goes read-only on file save

If I have a project file open for a few hours say 5 or more the files
eventually goes read-only and the only option I have is to save it under
another name. The Read-only recommended option is not checked and server
rights are not a problem as I am a system administrator with all rights to
everything.

This is on an XPSP2 machine with Project fully patched.

Any suggestions or ideas greatly appreciated as this is creating a great
deal of confusion and frustration.

Is the .mpp file hosted on this local machine or on a network drive?
If it is on the network, then somehow project has lost communication with
the file which is independent of access rights, etc. I'll have to scratch my
head on why this would happen on "local machine"
