Does anyone know of a way to do a network trace from a chosen task or
milestone to the beginning and/or end of that logic string, including every
task/milestone that is linked to the original choice?

Two ways come to mind immediately.
1. in Rod Gil's book: VBA Programming for Microsoft Office Project, ISBN
0-9759828-7-7 there is an example to trace predecessors and successors of a
task. Contact Rod once you have the book, he may have a better source code
example available.

2. There is a program available commercially called "PERT Chart Expert"
available from http://www.criticaltools.com This is listed as a companion
product on the mvp website http://www.mvps.org/project/

Both items are reasonably priced and available online.
