Project and Access

Hi,
Hoping somebody can help.

I'm just about to do some work for a client which is using MSP and Access,
currently they are doing some somrt of 'export' from MSP to 'Access', then
printing out the timesheets from access ( hard copy ).

An admin team then inputs the data in which then records actuals within the
system ( not sure yet whether this updates MSP direct or not ).

As this seems a totally silly way of doing things, anybody go anyideas as to
why or how they would have come round to this solution ? I presume they are
not using 'server' so thats why it's an export to access.

Hi Dave,

IMHO they go through the manual way because they can't make the program that
allows the people to update figures directly :)

Going through access or Excel is done many times for this sort of
application, amongst other things because many people can do some
programming in Access and do not want to learn Project's API.

Thanks Jan.
Is there a specific product that works well to achieve the same result ?
I've heard that Tenrox looks quite good but is more of a HR tool.

Bear in mind this client is NOT using or wants to use Project Server.

Thanks Jan.

When you say 'vba' do you mean within MSP or within Access/Excel with and
export/Saveas from MSP ?

Thanks again...

Hi,

It's you to choose!
From Excel or Access VBA you can open Project and access its objects or you
can work in Project and open Access or Excel to read its objects...
So it's about working directly in both as if it were one application: no
need to save as or import/export.
In VBA look for the help on the CreateObject function; try some and do come
back with questions if any.

Greetings

Just thought I'd put in my two cents here. I am a in a PMO office that uses
Tenrox and MSP Server. You have to have MSP Server to use Tenrox time
reporting. Tenrox is based on the Server component to store their
timesheets, etc. I have used VBA in both Excel, Access and MSP and once you
learn one you just need to understand the object model for the other to
utilize VBA. Does take some programming experience.

Just my two cents.
