Project Diagram selection not resizeable in Visio

Dale

Hi:
I create a chart in MS Project (.mpp file).
I look at the Network Diagram view (selected under View menu).
Note:
It is large in size: roughly 400 pages x 2600 pages,
where a page size = 8 1/2" x 11"

I select the entire chart contents, and select Copy.
I open Visio and select Paste from the Edit menu
OR right-click the mouse and select Paste.
This pastes an editable MS Project window into the Visio sheet.

Note: If I select any other form of "Paste" (e.g., Paste Special,
or tell it to paste a GIF image, etc.) it pastes a resizeable view
of just what was on the screen, not the entire contents of
the Project File's Network Diagram. But, if I just select paste,
an editable window gets pasted into Visio. Initially, this window
has the green resize tabs. If I try to resize it, it sizes back to
default dimensions. I found that by just selecting the object so
that its resize tabs appear, and then right-clicking and selecting
Format>Behavior, selecting the Double-Click tab and selecting
the Open Shape's Shape Transorm "bullet", I see the windows
"size shape info" when I double-click it.
For this case, the shape's width and height are both 12.5937".
If I try to change these values to something larger, these "default" values
reappear...not what I entered. If I change these values to something smaller
than 12.5937" it accepts my values.

Initially, I tried just resize the active Porjcet file in the Visio window by
resizing it via dragging on its black tabs, but it usually will resize back
to the default size (or disappear). And, say that I have a larger active
Project window in the Visio sheet. Once, I click out of the window
to keep it at that size but be back into Visio, the window rsizes back
to the default size or diappears. It fails to keep my new Project window';s
size settings. I want to be able to see the entire Porject window open in
Visio.

So, the key question is:
Why can't I view my entireProject File in Visio if I try to resize it ?
If I can, how do I go about fdoing it ?
This problem was repeatable on another computer with twice the
RAM that is available on mine.

P.S. Even if I initially select a smaller size area to Copy in Project
and the Paste into a Visio sheet, the same problem occurs, though
the default size values for the new selection may differ from 12.5937"

Hi,

The network diagram gets copied as a picture, not Visio objects. In Project
display the Analysis toolbar and in later versions of Project there is an
export to Visio wizard. This is more likely to give you results you expect.

Rod:

It is not copied as a picture. It is copied as an object: Once I paste it
into Visio,
I can double-click it and it becomes an editable object...it has
scroll-bars, etc.
The problem is that the Window doesn't allow me to resize it where it stays
changed: it reverts back to the small box default size.

That's great...except, that when I am in Project, it does not allow me
to save the file as a Viso filetype. The file types that it allows you to
Save As are rather limited. Thus, the Expoprt WIzard is ofg no use
to me. With other applications, all I have to do is copy the info from
the application, and the paste it ito a Viso winodw, or may have to
use Paste Special from within Visio (it depends).

I see that several other people have expressed an interest in being able to
export a MS Project Network Diagram to VISIO. I am very interested in how to
do this...

I am familiar with the VISIO import Wizard; however, it doesn't give me the
results I need.

Here's my situation:

I am using MS Project to create a Process Flow Diagram (due to my
familiarity with MS Project I find it easier to work in Project than directly
in VISIO). I have formatted the boxes in MS Project to capture the
information I need in my final Process Flow Diagram... (for example, I need
to include the NOTES field to capture relevant details...)

I would like to send my Network Diagram to VISIO, so that my graphics expert
can start with my basic template and more efficiently edit and evolve my work
into a finished product...

Even PERT CHART EXPERT doesn't allow me to export the Notes field, etc...

IS THERE SOME WAY TO SEND THE MS PROJECT FILE TO ACCESS (or some other
application) THAT WILL CAPTURE THE INFORMATION I NEED , SO THAT I CAN THEN
PULL THE INFORMATION INTO VISIO AS A GRAPHICAL DATABASE OBJECT?

I don't know how Visio import works, but you just need to do a Save as MS
Access file when saving the Project file. This would create an MDB file.

Does that meet your needs?

Andrew:

Like you, I'm not sure whether this will get me where I need to be... In
other words, I'm not sure whether VISIO can inport the information from
Access in a way that allows VISIO to represent each step in the process as a
Graphical object with its attributes (and associated clarifying Notes /
Comments).
