Project generates an incorrect WBS in Master/Sub Project Structure

I've created a large work plan in Project 2003 with a Master and several
sub-projects. There are a number of linkages between the various projects.
This, of course, causes "shadow" tasks to be created where the external
linkages exist.

However, when I generate the WBS, Project assigns values to the "shadow"
tasks causing the numbering of the real tasks to be out of sequence.

1.) Can this problem be avoided?
2.) If not, is there a work-around for generating a corrected version of the
WBS that can be populated into one of the TEXT fields?

I've already tried hiding the external linkages but the same numbers are
generated. It also doesn't help to try and regenerate each of the
sub-projects separately.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Nevermind. I developed an Excel spreadsheet that generates corrected
numbers that I copy and paste into a text field.
