Project management in Zimbabwe

Hello all,

Currently I'm bussy on a case where a non-profit organization carries out
projects in remote areas in Africa. Local project managers should be able to
manage their projects (offline) with a specific application, and once in a
while synchronize the project information with a central project application
in the Netherlands. For this reason I'm currently looking for a tool that
enables offline project management, but also enables the local project
managers to export their project details to a central project database (in
the Netherlands).

I have absolutely no knowledge about project management tools, please could
someone give me a help?

I believe that Project Server 2003 would handle your situation, including
both the working offline and syching up requirements. Because of bandwidth
issues, the PM's in Africa would probably need to use Terminal Services to
log into the Project Server system in the Netherlands. You can find more

Depending on what xeactly you need in terms of synchronisation, you may or
may not need Project Server - Project Standard may well be your easiest and
straightforward solution.

You can send me some more details (in Dutch, why not) I'll be glad to have a
look at it.

Beste Jan,

Het volgende is het geval. Een Nederlandse stichting heeft mensen (lokale
consultants) naar het buitenland uitgezonden om daar projecten op te zetten
(bv het bouwen van een school voor weeskinderen of het bouwen van een
waterput etc). Naast deze locale consultants zijn er ook een aantal centrale
consultants (in Nederland). Zowel de centrale als de lokale consultants
moeten hun projecten kunnen managen via een applicatie. De slechte internet
verbinding (soms duurt het dagen voordat er weer een verbinding is) zorgt er
echter voor dat ze niet via een Terminal Service sessie met Nederland kunnen
werken. Er moet dus (voor de lokale consultants) een applicatie komen waarin
ze project gegevens offline kunnen bijhouden. Op het moment dat er een
internet connectie is, dan zou de project informatie moeten worden
gesynchroniseerd met de centrale database. Eigenlijk is het het belangrijkst
dat veranderingen die lokaal gemaakt worden naar de centrale worden
gestuurd. Het is dus minder belangrijk dat veranderingen op de centrale
applicatie in Nederland, welke bijna nooit voorkomen, ook in de lokale
applicaties wordt doorgevoerd.

Een ander tool dan MS project zou ook prima zijn, ik heb alleen geen enkel
inzicht in wat er allemaal te koop is.

Misschien heeft u een suggestie?

Just to keep the non-Dutch speakers up to date:
Information Out of Africa comes through a very unreliable Internet line
(available on average once a week). In a direct mail in Dutch, I suggest
sending mpp files to and from.

Thanks for helping Ben and these good folks in Africa. Based on the
unreliability of Internet access there, I definitely think Project Server IS
NOT a viable option for these folks. I like your alternate suggestion about
sending .mpp files instead.
