Project status

I am trying to find out how I create a RAG status indicator for a project as
opposed to a task. I have created a custom view in Project Centre, but I need
to add one last column that shows the status of the project. Can someone
help? I have seen info on indicators for tasks, but not for projects.
thanks

First you need to determine what the criteria for for displaying the RAG
symbols. Can you tell us what they are and then we will probably be
able to help more.

Typically, these will be set depending on how far the Project deviates
from baseline date and costs.

If you have costed resources loaded to your plan and a baseline, you can use
teh schedule performance index and the cost performance index (SPI, CPI).
You can then use a formula to select the appropriate RAG.

Typically SPI, CPI > 0.90 is green
SPI, CPI >0.85 is Yellow (Amber)
otherwise red.
Sometimes greater than 1.10 is considered blue

Hi dave, thanks for your reply. I think I have it sorted now, but I do have
another question. I have set up a stoplight to monitor task & project
schedules. This is all working OK and I have the relevant graphical
indicators showing.
I was testing getting a smilet face to show up when a task is completed
earlier than the baseline finish date. I assumed this could be done just by
setting the % complete to 100. This doesn;t seem to work though, i have to
actually change the finish date on the task. Is that correct?

Just setting % complete to 100% as your test would surely show a smiley
face for all completed tasks (I haven't checked this). Don't you want
actual finish < baseline finish as the criteria (or ( [baseline finish]
!= NA ) AND ( actual finish < baseline finish ) )? You would have to
consider what you wanted to happen if there was no baseline finish date
set. And what about the baseline cost ...

Hello Michelle,

In order to have an Actual Finish date which is earlier than the
scheduled finish date, you will need to fill in the Actual Finish date.
If you simply mark a task 100% complete, Project will assume you
finished the task as originally scheduled. You may find using the
Tracking Table applied to either the Gantt chart or the Tracking Gantt
Chart view helps.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
