Publisher 2000 crashes when accessing pictures over LAN. Why?

When trying to access pictures on our company server the program crashes.
Loaded onto another machine with the same result. Got critical updates and
now crashes all the time so reverted to original. Would prefer not to have to
copy pictures to my local machine. Any ideas?
