Publisher 2002/XP

Paul

Hi all,

Does Publisher 2002, work with Hyperthreading PC's??

It installs OK, and SP3 installs OK after it.

BUT, no matter what I do, it crashes, when I click
on a template/go to about in the menu, or select
anything in the menu! And it goes round in circles
until I untick restart Publisher (which shows in the
error window that appears). Any clue why it
doesn't work??

I have Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Access 2002/XP
installed. And SP3 has been installed as well. And they
run fine, no prob at all.NONE of these crash.

Any info appreciated

Cheers

Does this happen if you restart your computer in SAFE MODE?

You're right Brian. It works FINE in Safe
Mode. Just not normal Windows mode.

What does this suggest Brian??

Also, John. I disabled the plugin thru Nortons
2003, and it still crashed.. So, it obviously
isn't that. Thanx for the info guys.

This normally indicates a problem with your video drivers.

Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 and older are critical about video
drivers. Usually upgrading (or downgrading in some cases) will fix
the problems you are encountering.

I would recommend is restarting your computer in 'Safe Mode'. To get
to Safe Mode, restart your computer and press "F8" at the beginning
of the boot process. Once prompted, choose 'Safe Mode'. Once in
'Safe Mode', attempt the same procedure with Microsoft Publisher.

If the publication works, then we will now assume the problem lies
within your video driver. Restart your computer.

If you have not already done so, you would want to visit the
manufacturers website of your video driver to download and install the
latest video driver that is available. It's important to note that
the CD-Rom that came with your video card will most likely NOT have the
most recent driver for your video adapter.

Popular Video Driver Sites:
-----------------------------
Nvidia
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=drivers

ATI
http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html

Voodoo
http://www.voodoofiles.com/
----------------------------

Search for the video driver that represents the model that you are using
and download the driver. To determine which card you have:

1. Right Click on your Desktop
2. Go to Properties
3. Go to the Settings Tab
4. Click on Advanced

Search for the video driver that represents the make and model that you
are using and download that driver. I would make sure you select "Save"
when prompted for download, not "Run". Typically many save to My Documents.

After you download the driver begin the setup. Use the following procedure
to change your video driver:

1. Right click anywhere on your Desktop, and choose Properties.
2. This will open Display Properties. Choose the "Settings" tab
3. Click on the "Advanced Properties" Button
4. On the "Adapter" Tab, Choose "Change"
5. Now you should see "Select Device". If your new driver is listed, select
that model.
6. If not, choose "Have Disk", and browse to the location where you setup
the new driver.
7. Now choose "OK". Be sure to have you Windows CD available, as you may
be prompted for this.
8. After setup and install is complete, restart your computer.

This should fix your troubles. If not, either contact your video card
manufacturer directly and inform them of the problem you have experienced,
or turn down your hardware acceleration. This will be at least a possible
temporary fix until you get a response from the tech support from your
video card manufacturer. The steps to turn down your hardware acceleration
are as follows:

1. Right click on "My Computer"
2. Choose "Properties"
3. On System Properties choose the "Performance" Tab
4. Under advanced settings, choose "Graphics"
5. Change hardare acceleration to "None"
6. Choose OK and OK again
7. Restart computer

(You don't necessarily have to go all the way to None. You could try one
notch at a time, but that will require a restart for each notch).

Nope I doubt it's the video drivers Ed

This is Publisher 2002 not 2003.

Everything else works fine with the drivers I have
installed now. (office, and every other program,
that is currently installed).

I have the latest version of the Nvidia
drivers already. They're not from a CD. Theyre
from the site, Publisher does work in safe mode.

In event viewer, this is the error/fault. Sounds
like it has something to do with the main program
itself.

Faulting application mspub.exe, version 10.0.2621.0, faulting module
mspub.exe, version 10.0.2621.0, fault address 0x000215ef.

Not necessarily. An error in mspub.exe can be hard to diagnose, but can be
linked to drivers.
There are only a couple of circumstances that change when you boot into safe
mode. One of those (and by far the most common cause of Publisher problems
that disappear in safe mode) is the video drivers.

Did you try turning the hardware acceleration down?

P

Paul

So what would that error mean??

It cant complain if its memory with either video
or ram. The card is 128mb and the system has 1gb

The program itself ran . Everything was there
(the templates etc). It just wouldn't let you do
anything in it!

I'm pretty sure the same video drivers, were installed
before and it ran properly.

It just wont run a 2nd time!

P

Paul

Nope tried every setting to do with hardware
acceleration. Crashes on each setting.

The drivers are for the Asus FX 5200 128mb card.
56.72 the latest Nvidia drivers.

P

Paul

Well I uninstalled the drivers for the card. To
see if Publisher would work OK. It still installed
and ran. BUT you can't do anything in it. I then
reinstalled the drivers. Still crashed. As as below
the hard acceleration settings (all 6 settings) dont do anything.

It still crashed. So, nothing else works, BUT
running it in Safe Mode. Which is of use to
nobody!

Ah ha Mary. That fixed the prob!

It goes! I had the HP printer which is a photosmart
145 printer as default.

I changed it to the Epson printer, and set it to default.

All go! Thanx for the fix

Cheers

As you can see Paul, by using SAFE MODE, we were able to pin point the
problem to a DRIVER. From there, you start with the video and printer driver
:)
